If you’ve lived in Pakistan over the past decade and needed portable internet chances are you’ve heard of PTCL CharJi. But how did this pocket WiFi device actually work? And why did it disappear from the market in 2024? Let’s break it down in simple terms.

What Was PTCL CharJi?

PTCL CharJi was a portable 4G LTE internet device provided by Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited. It looked like a small wireless router and allowed users to connect multiple devices phones, laptops, smart TVs and more to the internet without any cables or fixed line setup.

Think of it as your personal mobile WiFi that worked anywhere with PTCL 4G coverage.

 

How It Worked

CharJi used TD LTE Time Division LTE technology to connect wirelessly to PTCL’s network. Once powered on, the device would:

Connect to PTCL’s 4G LTE towers

Broadcast a secure WiFi signal

Allow up to 10 devices to connect at once

Provide download speeds up to 15 Mbps depending on coverage

It came with a built in rechargeable battery making it ideal for people on the go especially students remote workers and frequent travelers.

Was PTCL CharJi Truly Unlimited?

Not exactly. While some packages were marketed as unlimited they were actually subject to a Fair Usage Policy of around 150 GB per month. After hitting that limit, speeds could be throttled.

Why Was PTCL CharJi Discontinued?

In June 2024 PTCL officially shut down CharJi services in most cities. This was due to the expiration of a 20 year license for their Wireless Local Loop (WLL) services which the CharJi network relied on.

As an alternative PTCL began

offering customers a discounted upgrade to the Ufone 4G Blaze device which uses FDD LTE technology for improved speed and coverage.
