Pakistan’s promising young opener, Saim Ayub, has been officially ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a significant ankle injury sustained during the New Year’s Test against South Africa in Cape Town. The 22-year-old fractured his right ankle while fielding, leading to an initial recovery timeline of approximately 10 weeks .

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that Ayub is undergoing rehabilitation in England and is making steady progress. However, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized that the board is prioritizing Ayub’s long-term health over immediate participation. “I don’t want to put his future at risk because of one Champions Trophy. Saim Ayub is a valuable asset for us, and, God willing, he will recover soon,” Naqvi stated .

Ayub’s absence is a significant setback for Pakistan, especially considering his recent form. He was instrumental in Pakistan’s ODI series victories in Australia and South Africa, amassing 515 runs at an impressive average of 64.37 in just nine innings . His performances earned him a spot in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024.

In light of Ayub’s unavailability, the PCB has made adjustments to the squad. Veteran opener Fakhar Zaman was initially included but suffered an injury during the tournament, leading to Imam-ul-Haq being named as his replacement .

Looking ahead, Ayub’s participation in Pakistan’s upcoming white-ball tour of New Zealand, scheduled from March 16 to April 5, remains uncertain. The PCB has indicated that his availability will depend on passing all requisite fitness tests and medical evaluations .

As Pakistan continues its campaign in the Champions Trophy, the team will need to adapt to the absence of one of its most promising talents. Fans and officials alike hope for Ayub’s full recovery and return to international cricket in the near future.
