The monsoon’s wrath struck Karachi on August 20 2025 leaving the city submerged and struggling. Torrential rains unleashed scenes of chaos: streets turned into rivers homes were flooded power and communication networks collapsed and tragic deaths occurred across various neighborhoods.

Historic rainfall levels were recorded citywide. The airport area received 163.5 mm the highest since 1979 while the northeast witnessed 178 mm a record since that station’s establishment five years ago .

the rainfall reached 170 mm followed by 158.5 mm at the Airport Old Area 153 mm at Jinnah Terminal and 149.6 mm in Nazimabad .

Overall Karachi received up to 245 mm of rain in just 12 hours an overwhelming amount that surpassed the drainage system’s 40 mm capacity by far .

Disastrous Impacts floods today 

Public Holiday Declared In response to the crisis authorities declared Wednesday August 20 a public holiday to keep people safe and limit movement .

Urban Chaos: Key roads like Sharea e Faisal University Road and I.I. Chundrigar Road were submerged; underpasses in Nazimabad and Clifton were closed and vehicles stranded for hours .

Lives Lost floods today 

At least 10 fatalities resulted from electrocution, drowning, and collapsing walls, with some reports citing a toll of 11 including children—in incidents across Gulistan e Jauhar Orangi DHA and other areas .

Infrastructure Damaged floods today 

Power outages affected large parts of the city as over 600 electricity feeders tripped, delaying restoration efforts due to submerged substations .

Internet and mobile services also remained floods today 

down in many neighborhoods.

Rescues Underway: Rescue teams evacuated dozens, including 30 people trapped in a  call center in PECHS . Municipal bodies, the army, and volunteers mobilized to clear debris and waterlogged areas .

Authorities have warned of continued h  eavy rainfall. The NDMA and meteorological agencies advise staying indoors, especially near low‑lying and flood‑prone locations .
