Introductionย

Is Fertilizer Possibly Low in Pakistan?

ย

The fertilizer prices have registered a hot debate among the farmers and the policymakers throughout the year in Pakistan. As inflation increases and agricultural activities are on the rise, the question on the minds of many people is why fertilizer is so expensive and its impact on food security in the nation.

ย

How Much Is the Fertilizer Price in Pakistan Now?

ย

The current market price of Sona Urea is about Rs 4,300 per 50 kg bag and that of Sona DAP is Rs 13,200 approximately per bag of 50 kilos in August 2025. Such prices may shift a bit according to region and dealer.

ย

Why Are Prices So High?

ย

There are a few major reasons:

ย

1. Import Dependency on DAP

Pakistan imports almost 70 percent of its DAP fertilizer, and international prices have gone up due to high demand and fuel costs.

ย

2. Energy Prices

Urea is locally produced, but gas subsidies for fertilizer companies are becoming more limited. Without cheap gas, production costs go up.

ย

3. Lack of Government Control

While the government does offer some subsidies, enforcement is weak. Smuggling and hoarding make things worse, especially in provinces like Sindh and Balochistan.

You can read more about this issue in a recent article on The Express Tribune where farmers protested for fairer pricing.

ย

What Are Farmers Saying?

ย

Many farmers are asking for the government to fix the rates. They want urea to stay below Rs 2,000 per bag and DAP around Rs 6,000, which was the older rate a few years ago. But with the current situation, those numbers seem out of reach.
