How Much Resin Do You Really Need

How Much Resin Do You Really Need

When youโ€™re starting a project one of the most common questions is how much do I really need Whether youโ€™re making coasters filling a mold or doing a river table pour figuring out the right amount ofย  can feel like guesswork

Spoiler alert It doesnโ€™t have to be

Letโ€™s break it down so you can stop overbuying or worse running out halfway through your pour

Start With the Mold Size

First things first you need to know the exact size of the mold or space youโ€™re filling If itโ€™s a silicone mold for something like jewelry or coasters the packaging often tells you the volume in milliliters or ounces

No info on the mold No problem

Just measure the dimensions
Use this formula for volume in cubic centimeters
Volume = Length x Width x Height
Then convert cmยณ to milliliters
1 cmยณ = 1 ml

So a mold thatโ€™s 10 cm long 10 cm wide and 1 cm deep will need
10 x 10 x 1 = 100 ml of mixedย

Account for Mixing Ratio

Most epoxy are mixed in a 1 to 1 or 2 to 1 ratio depending on the brand Check your product instructions carefully If itโ€™s 1 to 1 and you need 100 ml total then youโ€™ll mix 50 ml of with 50 ml of hardener

If itโ€™s 2 to 1 and you need 100 ml resin

total thatโ€™s about 66 ml of resin and 33 ml of hardener
Always measure by volume unless your brand says otherwise

Round Up a Little resin

Always make a little extra Just 10 to 15 percent more than what your calculation says
Why Because youโ€™ll lose a bit when mixing scraping the container and pouring Plus itโ€™s better to have extra than come up short during a pour

So for a 100 ml mold make around 110 to 115 ml of mixedย

Use a Resin Calculator resin

Still not sure how much to mix Try using an onlineย  calculator like the one on
Art website
It lets you input the size of your project and gives you the exact amount of and hardener youโ€™ll need

Tip for Large Projects resin

If you’re doing a big pour like a river table or art panel youโ€™ll want to double check your numbers and maybe even do a test pour in a small section first is expensive and you donโ€™t want surprises
Also donโ€™t forget to seal the wood if youโ€™re using it or itโ€™ll soak up more than you expect
