President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed the government’s dedication to improving the lives and rights of workers, as reported by state media outlet Radio Pakistan.

In separate messages marking International Labour Day, both leaders emphasized the importance of honouring the contributions of labourers and ensuring their welfare.

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), Pakistan has yet to ratify 55 conventions and protocols. Although labour laws are in place, their enforcement remains weak. Despite government assurances of creating millions of jobs, longstanding issues such as low wages, inadequate social protection, and limited worker representation continue to persist.

President Zardari paid tribute to the hardworking men and women of Pakistan and acknowledged the struggles faced by labourers globally, as highlighted by state-run PTV.
