Since I’m really into mindfulness, have a rigorous skincare regimen, and enjoy reading self-help books, I didn’t schedule a wellness retreat. I made the reservation as I was having trouble concentrating. My sleep was off, my mood was weird, and even the things I usually enjoy felt like chores.

One night, I just typed โ€œquiet retreat near meโ€ into Google. A small center popped up โ€” nothing fancy. No fancy detox promises or influencers smiling with coconut water. Just a place with clean food, some nature, and no Wi-Fi.

That sounded perfect.


The Initial 24 Hours Were Horrible

I thought I had made a mistake when I arrived. No phone? No news? No work emails? I kept reaching for it like a phantom limb.

And the silence? It wasnโ€™t peaceful at first โ€” it was loud. All the thoughts Iโ€™d been dodging showed up. Everything I had been too busy to feel came to the surface. And I hated it.

But by the end of that first night, I slept. Deeply. For the first time in months.


You Donโ€™t Realize How Tired You Are Until You Actually Rest

The days were slow: early walks, stretching, healthy meals, quiet afternoons with a book or journal. There were no expectations. You could show up for group stuff or not.

No one was trying to fix anyone. We just existed next to each other โ€” tired people trying to untangle their lives quietly. Strangely, that seemed plenty.

I came to the realization that my had been working, scrolling, and acting as though nothing was wrong for months. I didn’t have any profound life revelations on the retreat. But it let me pause. And that pause felt like oxygen.


Wellness Isnโ€™t Always Pretty

There were no โ€œbefore and afterโ€ moments. Just small, human ones.

Like when I cried during a guided breathing session and didnโ€™t feel the need to explain myself. Or when I tasted food and actually tasted it โ€” not just inhaled it while checking notifications. Or when I sat under a tree doing absolutely nothing, and it felt better than any productivity hack.

Wellness isn’t always a “aha” experience. At times, it involves recalling its purpose like to simply be a person once more.


Coming Home Felt Different

I came home to the same inbox, the same stress, the same messy apartment. But I came back a little slower. A little softer. I started going for walks without headphones.On my phone, I utilize aircraft more often. Because of some things that didn’t feel right, I said “no.”

Nothing huge. Just shifts. But real ones.


You Donโ€™t Have to Be Falling Apart to Take a Break

I think thatโ€™s what I want to say most: you donโ€™t need a crisis to rest. You donโ€™t need to justify your exhaustion with some dramatic backstory.

Youโ€™re allowed to step away. Youโ€™re allowed to take care of yourself quietly. Youโ€™re allowed to want less noise.

Wellness retreats arenโ€™t about being trendy or spiritual or โ€œhealing your inner childโ€ (unless thatโ€™s what you want). Sometimes, theyโ€™re just about finally being still long enough to hear yourself again.
