You know, if someone had told me a few years ago that Donald Trump would be holding crypto, I would’ve laughed it off. I mean, this is the same guy who went on Twitter (or X, whatever it is now) and slammed Bitcoin, calling it a scam and saying it was “based on thin air.” So how the heck did we get from that to Trump actually owning crypto?

Well, here’s the story — not the overhyped headlines, but the actual journey of how Trump went from a crypto critic to someone who’s now pocketing Ethereum.

Trump Was Never a Fan of Crypto… At First

Let’s rewind to 2019. Trump was still president then, and he made it pretty clear he didn’t like cryptocurrencies. He didn’t trust them, he thought they were shady, and he basically said they were dangerous for the U.S. economy. He was all about the dollar, and Bitcoin just didn’t fit into that narrative.

To be honest that was not a unique stance back then. A lot of politicians were still suspicious of crypto. Even today many in Washington are still trying to wrap their heads around how it all works.

So when Trump said those things nobody was really shocked. He is old school. He likes gold property big buildings not digital coins you can not touch.

But as usual with Trump things took a turn.

The NFT Thing That No One Expected

In late 2022, out of nowhere, Trump dropped his own NFT collection. If you missed it, it was wild — digital trading cards with Trump as a superhero, cowboy, astronaut, and so on. Totally over-the-top, but honestly kind of hilarious. The internet roasted it hard at first, but here’s the twist — those NFTs sold out fast.

They were selling for $99 a pop, and thousands of people grabbed them. Most weren’t even crypto-savvy folks. They were just fans who wanted a Trump collectible. Some bought them as a joke. Some hoped they’d go up in value. Either way, it was a hit.

Now, here’s the key part: those NFTs were based on the Ethereum blockchain. So whether Trump liked it or not, he had entered the world of crypto. Because every sale, every resale, and every royalty tied to those NFTs came in ETH — Ethereum.

So, Does Trump Actually Own Crypto Now?

Yep. He sure does.

In 2023, financial documents tied to his campaign revealed that he had somewhere between $250,000 to $500,000 in a crypto wallet. That wallet was linked directly to the NFT project.

Then, as time went on and more of those NFTs were resold (because remember, NFT creators get a cut every time they’re flipped), that wallet grew. Based on public blockchain data, by mid-2024, Trump’s crypto earnings had crossed $8 million — all from those digital cards and their royalties.

The main coins he holds?

Ethereum ETH

Wrapped Ethereum

And of course, his own NFTs

There’s also some noise about Trump being linked to a meme coin called MAGA Coin (TRUMP) — not officially backed by him, but people launched it in his name. It’s kind of like how there’s a Dogecoin and then ten spinoffs of Dogecoin. Trump hasn’t confirmed anything about that, and he probably won’t. But some folks believe he might own a piece of that pie too, even if it’s indirectly.

What About Bitcoin?

Interestingly, Trump doesn’t seem to own any Bitcoin. At least nothing public has shown that. His entire crypto trail is tied to Ethereum and NFTs. Maybe it’s because his project was launched on Ethereum. Maybe he still doesn’t trust Bitcoin. Hard to say.

The Big Shift in His Attitude

Now this is where things get political. Lately Trump been changing his tone on crypto. In recent speeches and interviews especially heading into the 2024 elections he started saying things like “We need to protect American innovation,” and “Crypto companies should not be driven out of the U.S.”

It is a far cry from calling Bitcoin a scam do not you think?

Some folks say this is just Trump being Trump — reading the room and adjusting his message. And honestly, they’re probably right. The crypto crowd is growing. It’s not just tech bros anymore. Young voters, small investors, even middle-aged folks trying to make some money on the side — they’re all watching the crypto market now.

So Trump, being the marketer and opportunist that he is, saw the wave and jumped on.

Business or Belief?

Look, I don’t think Trump suddenly became a blockchain believer. I doubt he’s reading whitepapers or analyzing gas fees. What he does get, though, is money. And attention. And branding.

Launching the NFT project made him millions. It put his name in headlines again. It connected him with a new, younger audience. And it gave him a way to monetize his image without even needing a traditional platform.

So no, I don’t think he’s into crypto for the philosophy. But as a business move? It was genius
