Who is Saeed Ajmal?
Saeed Ajmal is a legend in the making when it comes to off-spin bowlers produced by Pakistan He got his introduction to the world of international cricket through his mystery spin and killer doosras He did not have an easy route to reach the top but certainly his effort and special bowling motion made him a household name within a very short interval of time
Also born in Faisalabad Ajmal began his cricketing career at the local level and did not get a nod in the national side until well into his early thirties Most cricketers retire by that age but Ajmal was only entering the fray His real entry came in 2009 when he first played an ODI against India and his display on the field soon got him a permanent place in the team
He became famous for his doosra a delivery that spins the opposite way of a traditional off break Even some of the best batsmen in the world struggled to pick his variations He was part of the squad that played in major tournaments including the ICC World T20 and World Cups His best performances often came under pressure making him a match winner for Pakistan on many occasions
At his peak Saeed Ajmal was ranked number one in ICC ODI rankings and also made a strong mark in Tests and T20s His bowling was not just about spin but also intelligence and accuracy He could bowl in the powerplay and in death overs something rare for a spinner
Despite facing challenges including a temporary ban over his bowling action he came back stronger with a remodelled action and continued to play for Pakistan till his retirement in 2015
After retirement he shifted his focus to coaching and training young players at the Saeed Ajmal Cricket Academy based in Faisalabad He remains an important figure in Pakistani cricket and his legacy continues through the young spinners he mentors
